Atlas VPN closes down, merges with NordVPN

Atlas VPN throws in the towel. The VPN provider explains that costs have risen enormously and that the market is extremely competitive. “These factors have led us to conclude that continuing Atlas VPN is not sustainable in the long term.”

Atlas VPN writes this in a blog about the decision to discontinue it.

Atlas VPN in a nutshell

Atlas VPN has been around since 2019, meaning it is a relatively new player in the VPN market. Partly because Atlas VPN offers a free VPN service, it is a popular provider among more than six million VPN users worldwide. In 2021, Nord Security acquired the provider, meaning it has since fallen under the same parent company as market leader NordVPN.

Another reason why AtlasVPN is so popular is its many server locations. The VPN provider has more than a thousand VPN servers in 45 countries. As a result, the VPN provider is fast for daily use. The premium version of Atlas VPN is equipped with security features such as SafeSwap and MultiHop+. Thanks to these options, internet traffic is routed through multiple IP addresses, which makes tracking virtually impossible and benefits your online privacy.

Furthermore, AtlasVPN uses modern security protocols such as IKEv2 and WireGuard, and the subscription prices are competitive. You can read all about it in our Atlas VPN review.

Rising costs cause of downfall

After five years of loyal service, Atlas VPN delivered sad news on Monday. The VPN provider has decided to pull the plug on its services. “This decision was not taken lightly: it results from a comprehensive assessment of the changing cybersecurity landscape and our place in it,” the provider wrote.

The decision to stop was largely based on the financial situation. The company says it wants to offer customers a secure, accessible and user-friendly VPN service. This means that Atlas VPN must continuously invest in new technological requirements to meet them. The ‘escalating costs’ and increasing levels of competition in the VPN market have made Atlas VPN realize that continuation is unsustainable in the long term.

Atlas VPN subscription will be transferred to NordVPN

Does this mean you lose your money and have to look for another VPN provider? Certainly not. To ensure that you can continue to use VPN services uninterruptedly, Atlas VPN works with the sister company NordVPN. All current subscribers will be automatically transitioned to NordVPN’s service for the remainder of their Premium subscription.

Any additional purchases will also be transferred to NordVPN. The feature that automatically renews the subscription will be discontinued. Paying subscribers to Atlas VPN will soon receive an email with instructions on how to create an account with NordVPN.

On Wednesday, April 24, paying subscribers will be automatically transferred to NordVPN. It is no longer possible to take out a new subscription with AtlasVPN.
